Gamblers tell their own stories on DVD
The Problem Gambling Foundation and Te Kahui Hauora have released a DVD entitled Eliminating Gambling Harm.
The DVD, produced by Nelson's Tui Video will be given to anyone with a gambling problem and used as a resource by others working in the problem gambling sector.
The DVD features experts talking about how gambling becomes addictive, how it affects the brain and what people can do about it. There is also an excellent clip on how a pokie machine works, highlighting some of the more common myths about these machines.
A key feature of the DVD, and perhaps the most moving part, is gamblers telling their own stories.
Eliminating Gambling Harm also focuses on helping families understand what the problem gambler is going through as it can be a difficult and stressful time for family members.
