Lost on Class 4 gambling (pokies in pubs, clubs and TABs)
in Hastings in 2019.
In the 2019 calendar year, more than $939 million was lost across New Zealand on Class 4 gambling - that's pokies in pubs, clubs and TABs. Of that amount, $18.2 million+ was lost on pokie machines in the Hastings Council area.
The Health and Lifestyles Survey run by the Health Promotion Agency shows that only 1.3% of New Zealanders regularly use pub pokie machines, and the Department of Internal Affairs estimates that 30% of pokie machine losses come from moderate or severe risk problem gamblers.
It is evident that a large proportion of money lost on pokies comes from a small number of people.
The concentration of gambling venues tends to be higher in areas of high deprivation - about 50% of all machines in New Zealand are in decile 8-10 areas as designated by the Ministry of Health.
It is therefore reasonable to conclude that the majority of the money being lost on pokies is coming from the poorest New Zealanders - those who can least afford it.
